Weight-loss treatments
Weight-loss options
- Diets - unfortunately do not provide effective long-lasting weight-loss. At best, they will achieve 10% weight-loss which will disappear upon stopping them.
- Drug therapy - too does not provide sustained weight-loss, averaging only 5-10% weight-loss whilst the drug is being taken and often have side-effects.
- Exercise - a significant amount of exercise is needed to burn just a few calories making it very difficult to lose weight by exercise alone.
- Surgery - by far the most successful long-term weight-loss strategy.
What is weight-loss surgery?
Weight-loss surgery limits the amount of food you can eat by surgically reducing the size of your stomach or bypassing it completely. There are a number of different procedures available, each performed by keyhole surgery to minimise recovery time and reduce scarring. We offer the following minimally invasive (keyhole surgery) types of weight-loss treatment:
What are the benefits of weight-loss surgery?
- BMI reduced to 35 or less
- Improvement or reduced risk of obesity related conditions including diabetes, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease
- Improvement of your general wellbeing
- Ability to undertake more physical activity
- Increase in self-confidence.
What are the risks of weight-loss surgery?
In deciding whether to undergo weight-loss surgery it is necessary to balance the risks of the procedure against the risks of obesity. Your consultant will fully discuss the risks of your chosen procedure with you and make sure you have all the information you need to help you make a decision. Complications that can occur include wound and chest infections, bleeding, injuries to the stomach, oesophagus or bowel, and internal obstructions.
