We recognise that deciding to undergo weight-loss surgery is a big decision, so here we answer some of your questions.

Lady with scalesHow much weight will I lose?

In order to lose weight and keep it off it is necessary not just to have the operation but also to eat a balanced diet and to exercise regularly.  Studies suggest that you will lose between 30% and 74% of your excess weight, the most rapid period of weight-loss being in the first 18 to 24 months following surgery.  But, it does depend upon the weight-loss treatment you have and how committed you are to your new lifestyle.

Will weight-loss surgery improve my health?

Weight-loss surgery has been reported to improve several comorbid conditions including diabetes mellitus, sleep apnoea and obesity associated hypoventilation (resulting in hypoxia and sleepiness during the daytime), high blood pressure and serum lipid abnormalities (high cholesterol and triglycerides).

What are the risks and complications of surgery?

All surgical procedures are associated with some risk and this risk is increased for surgery on overweight patients.  In deciding whether to undergo weight-loss surgery it is necessary to balance the risks of the procedure against the risks of obesity.  Complications that can occur following surgery include wound and chest infections, bleeding, injuries to the stomach and bowel, and leaks from the join in the bowel.

Do I need to tell my GP?

You do not need a referral from your GP for weight-loss surgery.  However, it’s a good idea to talk to your GP beforehand, as not only will they be able to give you general advice about surgery but they can make sure that, with your permission, any important information about your medical history is passed to your bariatric surgeon.

Do I need to eat a special diet after surgery?

You will need to eat a normal balanced diet after surgery.  The operation will help in weight reduction but it is important to develop healthy eating habits and eating small portions.  Patients undergoing bypass surgery will need to take vitamins, iron and calcium supplements for life and increase their protein intake.

Can I have children after weight-loss surgery?

You should not become pregnant during the period of rapid weight-loss but there is no reason not to after your weight-loss has stabilised, which is usually about 18 to 24 months after the operation.

Will I need cosmetic surgery after losing weight?

You may or may not.  Skin is elastic and will try to mould to your new body shape.  Sometimes though it may be beneficial to have excess skin removed via cosmetic surgery such as a tummy tuck.
