Female infertility
In the past 25 years, the percentage of births to women aged 30 or over has doubled as women delay childbirth until career or other lifestyle objectives have been achieved. However, female fertility begins to steeply decline in our early 30s and certainly by the age of 35.
In addition to the age factor, the two main causes of female infertility are ovulation disorder (causes 30% of all infertility) and fallopian tube damage. Endometriosis, fibroids and hostile cervical mucus are additional causes.
| CAUSE | INVESTIGATION | TREATMENT OPTION |
|---|---|---|
| Failure of ovulation | Hormone assessments |
|
| Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes | ||
| Endometriosis | ||
| Fibroids | May not need treatment but can be surgically removed, if necessary | |
| Hostile cervical mucus |
