CT scanning
Computed Tomography (CT) is a form of imaging using x-rays which rotate around the body taking cross-sectional images of parts of the body. The series of cross-sectional scans is built up using a computer to produce a detailed 3D image of your internal body structures and organs for diagnosis. CT is very accurate for early detection of certain conditions.
Our service
Holly House Hospital has a multi-slice CT scanner producing images of high quality and reduced scanning times. We offer a wide range of CT scans to help diagnose inflammation, disease and cancer and monitor many other health conditions including of the brain, internal organs, soft tissue and all joints and bones.
Your scan
We have dedicated patient waiting areas and changing facilities to enable you to prepare for your scan in a friendly, comfortable and relaxed environment. You may need to remove some of your clothes or be given a gown to wear depending on which part of your body is being scanned.
Once ready, your radiographer will accompany you into the scanning room and ask you to lie down on the scanner table which will move through the ring-shaped CT scanner to take the images. On average a CT scan takes 15 to 25 minutes in total. Your radiographer can talk to you whilst you are having your scan and put you at your ease but it is important that you remain still as any movement will blur the images produced.
If you are, or there is a possibility you may be, pregnant please tell the radiographer before your x-ray.
Your results
A Consultant Radiologist will read and report on the images from your scan. Images and results will be sent to the doctor, consultant or specialist who referred you for your CT scan for them to discuss with you. This is generally within 48 hours but can be sooner.
Referrals
You will usually need to be referred for diagnostic imaging by a GP or other healthcare professional.
