Facelift

A facelift is an operation to tighten the skin on the face, producing a firmer and smoother appearance.  Our faces are our primary feature and, therefore, a major factor in determining self-confidence in our appearance.  But, as we age the skin on our faces and necks begins to sag from a loss of muscle tone.

Facelifts do not have an effect on the entire face, but primarily address drooping skin on the lower face and neck.  They will not eradicate lines on the forehead, around the mouth or the 'crow's feet' around the eyes and so are often performed in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments such as eyelid surgery.  Surgery also will not stop the ageing process but you will not look as old as you would otherwise have done.

The results can be excellent.  It should not be obvious that someone has had a facelift, instead you will look young and full of vitality.

Female faceThe procedure

A facelift is performed under general anaesthetic and usually requires a one or two night stay in hospital.  An incision is made along the hairline and around the ears.  Once any excess fat is removed, the facial muscles are tightened and the skin on the lower part of the face and neck lifted up into its new position.  Any excess skin removed and your skin is then stitched back to the line where the cut was initially made.

Your recovery

Following the operation, you may experience some bruising and swelling but this can be disguised with a little make-up.  The stitches are hidden in the hairline and around the ear and will be removed after two weeks, at which time you should be able to return to your normal day-to-day activities.
