Breast implants
Breast enlargement, also known as breast augmentation, is one of the commonest cosmetic procedures, having been performed on over three million women worldwide. Breast augmentation is an operation to increase breast size and fullness by inserting an implant behind the breast tissue.
Many women choose to have a breast enlargement because it increases breast size and creates a pleasing, full shape. It is usually considered by women whose breasts never develop to a size which they are happy with, or who lose breast size after pregnancy, breast feeding or weight loss. The results are generally excellent and women are delighted with their new or restored figure, reporting both increased confidence and renewed quality of life.
The procedure
There are many different kinds and sizes of implants and your surgeon will discuss with you the various types and shapes of implants, advising you on the most appropriate implant for you. The implant is inserted under the breast tissue through a small incision in the natural crease underneath your breast. Breast enlargement is carried out under general anaesthetic, the operation usually takes about an hour to perform and may require an overnight stay in hospital.
Your recovery
Most people return to work within a few days but heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided until the wound has healed fully. A properly fitted bra should be worn continuously for two weeks after the operation. Scarring is minimal and usually hidden in the natural crease of the breast.
