After dramatic weight loss or pregnancy, our body shape changes.  We can be left with loose folds of skin and fat over the abdomen, where the skin has been stretched and the underneath tummy muscles pushed apart, which can be source of embarrassment particularly when wearing swimwear or even undressing in front of our partners.  Weight loss will often make the tummy look worse and exercise does not improve it.

Abdominoplasty (known as a tummy tuck) is an operation to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen/tummy.  It is not a solution to being overweight, ideally you should be within several pounds of youir ideal weight before considering a tummy tuck.  Majority of patients opting for this procedure are women who dislike the effects childbirth has had on their body shape and appearance.

Abdominoplasty is a major operation carried out under general anaesthetic and requiring a one or two night stay in hospital.  The operation involves removing an area of skin and underlying fat, and repositioning the tummy button.  A less radical technique called apronectomy is also available for patients who describe having a 'shelf' below the belly button. 

Immediately after the operation your abdominal skin will feel very tight, the resultant scar will initially be pink but will eventually return to normal skin colour and should appear just above your pubic hair.  It is recommended that you have at least two weeks away from work or more if you have a physical occupation - your surgeon will advise you.
