Rhinoplasty or nose reshaping is the operation to reduce and/or refine the nose. It is the most frequently requested facial surgery roughly in equal proportins by men and women.

Those seeking consultations are often distressed by comments or remarks made over a number of years and have often been the subject of irritating jokes. Others may have sustained nasal injuries causing deformities. Humps and prominent tips are masculine features and if present on the nose of a female may give a harsh appearence to the face, even to the extent a woman may refuse to be photographed in profile or hides the nose behind an excess of long hair. in the vast majority of cases, men and women alike wish to have a normal, average nose which will blend into their face rather than dominate their features.

The most common request to reduce the size and shape of a large nose, but occasionally an increase in profile is appropriate. Your requirements should be discussed fully with your surgeon. Feel free to bring photographs of the nose you wish to have, but remember, everyone is different - for instance, skin thickness varies enourmously so a small delicate nose cannot be made from a large thickened one.

Your surgeon alone is the only qualified person to discuss your expectations with.

Rhinoplasty is carried out under general anaesthetic through incisions in the nostrils, so there are no external scars, unless the size of the nostrils are reduced. In this case, small incisions around the sides of the nostrils are necessary which are placed in the natural crease lines between the nose and cheek. The scars will initially be pink but will eventually return to normal skin colour.

If the nasal bones have to be reset in a rhinoplasty operation, 'black eyes' may occur after surgery, and the eyes and the face will be a little swollen. A plaster cast is required to support and protect the bones while they set into their new position.

This procedure has been carried out successfully for many years and the vast majority of patients undergoing rhinoplasty gain a feeling of increased self-confidence due to the improvement of their own perceived body image.

A no-obligation, free consultaion with the surgeon who would carry out your operation is available by calling 020 8936 1225.
