All of us have fat cells which can develop into localised fatty deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise.  This unsightly distribution of fat is caused by the body’s natural tendency to deposit fat in one particular area of our body, most commonly on our hips and tummy.  Other areas include the thighs, inside of the knees, 'love handles', upper arm and neck.

Female bodyLiposuction is a surgical technique used to remove unwanted fat deposits in both men and women.  The essential principle is that liposuction can alter the body's contours, and therefore clothing sizes from top and bottom can be brought into line, addressing the 'pear shape' appearance.  Fat cells are thought not to regenerate in adult life, therefore their removal via liposuction should give a permanent change in contour.

The procedure involves a general anaesthetic and a one-night stay in hospital.  A few very small incisions are made to insert a probe into the fat and remove it via a high vacuum suction device.  Great care is taken to ensure there is only minimal bruising but you should be prepared for some to occur.  After liposuction a tight pressure garment will have to be worn for three weeks in order to provide the optimum conditions for the treated areas to heal flat and produce the best possible results.  Time away from work depends on the area(s) treated and can vary from between seven and ten days.

It is important to understand that liposuction is not a treatment for reducing weight but a solution to localised areas of fatty deposits, which persist no matter how much dieting, massage or exercise is undertaken.  The amount of fat that can be removed from an area is limited by what is safe and there is a natural limitation as to when no further fat can be removed.  Patients who have loose skin or dimpling may not be ideal candidates for this procedure.  At your initial consultation, your surgeon will provide honest advice and a realistic expectation of the results.
