Training & Background
Mr Jacob was appointed as consultant general surgeon specialising in vascular and laparoscopic surgery at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust in 1999. His NHS clinics are based at Queens Hospital after having worked at the King George Hospital for 11 years.
Mr Jacob has extensive experience in vascular surgery – both venous and arterial. He was the first surgeon to perform the keyhole repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) ) using a stent graft at King George Hospital in 2000. He carries out a variety of other vascular procedures such as lower limb bypass surgery, carotid endarterectomy and angioplasties in the private sector.
Mr Jacob has a special interest in varicose vein surgery and the new minimally invasive treatment options that are available. He introduced the VNUS Closure (radiofrequency ablation of varicose veins) in the private sector in Essex and as a pilot study at King George Hospital. He has performed over 250 VNUS Closure procedure with excellent results and patient satisfaction.
Mr Jacob also has a keen interest in laparoscopic surgery and first introduced the laparoscopic extraperitoneal hernia repair (TEP) at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. He also won the first prize for his presentation on laparoscopic hernia at the European Endoscopic Surgeons Conference hosted in 2004.
Mr Jacob has carried out over 500 laparoscopic hernia repairs in the private sector with only two recurrences. In addition to hernia surgery he also routinely performs laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and minimally invasive thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of hands and armpits).
