Training & Background

Dr Hughes trained at University College, London. He trained initially in General Practice, working both in the UK and in New Zealand, and became a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He then travelled to New Zealand again to work in a Sports Medicine Clinic before returning to the UK to complete a Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine. Dr Hughes completed his specialist training in 2010, as a member of the London Deanery Registrar rotation in Sport and Exercise Medicine. He is one of the few doctors on the GMC Specialist Register for Sport and Exercise Medicine. In addition, he remains a fully qualified General Practitioner.  

Dr Hughes has looked after many different sports participants of all ages and abilities, ranging from weekend warriors to Olympic and National level athletes in a wide variety of different sports. These have included members of the New Zealand Silver Ferns Netball squad, the All Whites National Soccer Team, Super 14 Rugby Players, Olympic and Commonwealth Athletes, FA England Women’s Team Players, and professional footballers at various teams.

He is currently the Club Doctor for Leyton Orient Football Club, and has provided care at a number of different medical events including provincial rugby matches, athletic events such as the World Student Games, Triathlons, Davis Cup Tennis events, and more recently Olympic Test events.  Dr Hughes will be providing medical care at the forthcoming 2012 Olympics.  

Most recently, Dr Hughes has been appointed as a Consultant at Newham University Hospital NHS Trust where he runs a Sports Injury Clinic, and he has also been appointed as Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine, Queen Mary University, where he leads the MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine.

In addition to his work in Sport and Exercise Medicine, Dr Hughes has an interest in Medical Education and possesses a number of postgraduate qualifications in this area. He is involved in teaching and assessing junior doctors in both Sport and Exercise Medicine and other areas of clinical practice. He is a current examiner for the Final MBBS OSCE exams at St Barts and The London Hospital Medical School.
