A sleeve gastrectomy is a type of weight loss surgery to reduce the size of your stomach.  The stomach, although smaller, works in the same way as before but as you will only be able to eat a small meal, you will lose weight, especially if you also follow a low fat, low sugar diet.

Sleeve gastrectomy was originally developed as the first of a two-stage duodenal switch procedure in patients who were seriously obese and for whom the risks of a long operation were considered too high.  However, the sleeve gastrectomy alone may reduce excess weight by about 30-50%, so is now being used by more and more people as a single-stage weight loss procedure.

The procedure
This procedure involves removing ¾ of the stomach, along the greater curve of the stomach, leaving it in the form of a narrow tube.  This effectively restricts the stomach capacity to about 60–100cc at any time but without affecting its function.

Recovery
You will need to stay in hospital for a couple of days following surgery.

The risks

  • Long staple line – risk of leakage and/or haemorrhage
  • Amount of weight lost may be disappointing in some cases
  • Weight re-gain can be a problem after two to three years.

The benefits
As with all weight loss surgery, by losing significant weight patients usually feel physically and mentally better.  Pre-operative problems such as diabetes, hypertension, stress incontinence, back pain, knee pain, heel pain, sleep apnoea and other complications of obesity are usually either improved or eliminated altogether.
